The Sweetest Gender Reveal Surprise in Alexandria’s Founders Park
When it came time for our client and her husband to discover whether they were expecting a baby boy or baby girl, she planned an afternoon that would give them space to receive the news together.
She selected our Personal Moment for Two at Founders Park, surrounded by the greenery and waterfront views of Old Town Alexandria. The experience was designed in our Cedar and Sage palette and included professional photography, a pork-free grazing board and several thoughtful enhancements. Jamese had carefully arranged the celebration—the only detail she could not, and did not want to, plan was the answer waiting for them.
That secret was entrusted to one of her closest friends, who traveled from California with a lemon Nothing Bundt Cake and joined the couple for the reveal. What began as a Personal Moment for Two became a deeply personal celebration for three, complete with cake, an alcohol-free rosé toast and the wonderful news that a baby girl was on the way.
An Intimate Celebration for Four
Although the gender remained a surprise, Jamese had a clear vision for the experience surrounding it. She wanted something intimate and thoughtfully arranged, with enough time for her and her husband to enjoy the moment without the pace or pressure of a larger event.
Our Personal Moment for Two created that foundation. We then expanded the seating and place settings so her friend could remain for the picnic after delivering the surprise. This kept the afternoon centered on the expecting parents while including the person Jamese trusted with such an important secret.
Some surprises need a crowd. This one only needed three people, a lemon Bundt cake and a beautiful afternoon along the Old Town Alexandria waterfront.
Jamese and her partner booked our Personal Moment for Two without knowing whether they would be celebrating a baby boy or baby girl. The answer traveled all the way from California with one of Jamese’s closest friends, who arrived carrying the Nothing Bundt Cakes box—and a very important secret.
What began as an intimate picnic for the expecting parents became an afternoon shared with the friend who helped them learn that their baby girl was on the way.
The Friend Who Carried the Secret
Jamese’s friend did much more than deliver the cake.
She traveled from California to be present for the reveal, brought the lemon Nothing Bundt Cake and stayed to enjoy the rest of the picnic with the couple. Her presence gave the afternoon the intimacy of a Personal Moment for Two while adding one more person who understood how meaningful the occasion was.
There was no large crowd or elaborate stage. The focus remained on the couple, their growing family and the friend who had come such a long way to help them celebrate.
A Personal Moment for Two—Slightly Expanded
Our Personal Moment for Two is traditionally arranged as an intimate experience for a couple. For Jamese’s gender reveal, we expanded the seating and place settings so her friend could comfortably join them.
The picnic included the essentials that allow guests to arrive and immediately settle into the experience:
Blankets and assorted pillows
A custom-made picnic table
Pampas floral arrangements
Candle styling
Coordinating plates, flatware, napkins and placemats
Wine glasses
A custom letter board
Water and hand sanitizer
Waste collection for an easy departure
Their letter board read, “A good and perfect gift is coming February 2027,” giving the setup a personal detail that will always connect these photographs to this season of their lives.
Cedar and Sage with a New Draping Detail
We styled the picnic in our Cedar and Sage palette, using soft whites, warm natural textures and muted greenery throughout the setup.
This gender reveal was also the first time we experimented with draping around the picnic table. The fabric softened the shape of the table and added movement beneath the trees without making the design feel overly formal.
Paired with the greenery, macramé accents, rattan place settings and ivory fringe umbrella, the draping gave the picnic a relaxed, slightly bohemian feeling that suited Founders Park beautifully.
It was a small creative risk that ended up becoming one of our favorite details from the afternoon.
A Lemon Cake with a Very Sweet Answer
The Nothing Bundt Cakes lemon cake held the answer everyone had been waiting for.
Jamese and her partner sat together beneath the umbrella, with the cake placed between them and their friend nearby to witness the moment. Once the surprise was revealed, they learned that their good and perfect gift was a baby girl.
The cake became part of the celebration afterward, giving the three friends something sweet to enjoy while they processed the news, laughed and began imagining everything ahead.
Popping Alcohol-Free Bubbly for Their Baby Girl
We surprised the couple with a bottle of alcohol-free rosé for the toast.
It gave Jamese the fun of popping a bottle and raising a glass without introducing alcohol into the experience. The pink rosé also happened to coordinate perfectly with the news they had just received.
They poured their glasses, toasted to their daughter and continued enjoying the picnic together. It was a simple enhancement, but one that made the reveal feel even more celebratory.
A Pork-Free Grazing Board Made for Their Picnic
Jamese’s experience also included one of our deluxe grazing boards, prepared without pork.
Instead of traditional pork-based cured meats, the board featured turkey and chicken cuts alongside cheeses, crackers, fruit, nuts, olives, dips and other grazing accompaniments.
Dietary preferences should never feel like an afterthought. When clients share their needs with us in advance, we can adjust the menu while preserving the abundance and presentation guests expect from a Pampas grazing board.
The board gave the couple and their friend something easy to enjoy throughout the three-hour picnic without interrupting the reveal or their photography time.
Professional Photography Around Founders Park
Photography for the afternoon was captured by Georgia, who documented the reveal, the picnic details and the quieter moments between Jamese and her partner.
After the cake and toast, the couple stepped away from the setup for portraits around Founders Park. The waterfront, tree-lined paths, open lawn and rocky shoreline created several different backgrounds without requiring them to leave the park.
Some photographs focused on the couple together. Others centered Jamese, her growing belly and the anticipation of becoming a mother. The gallery also preserved the candid parts of the afternoon—their laughter, affectionate glances and the moment Jamese celebrated with the friend who had traveled from California.
Professional photography was especially valuable for this experience because the reveal happened quickly. Jamese and her partner could remain present while Georgia captured the expressions they might otherwise have missed.
The Enhancements That Completed the Experience
Jamese began with a Personal Moment for Two and selected a few thoughtful enhancements:
Sixty minutes of professional photography
A deluxe pork-free grazing board
An ivory fringe umbrella
An ice bucket with ice
Additional accommodation for her friend
Each addition served a purpose. The umbrella created shade and helped frame the design. The grazing board gave everyone something substantial to enjoy. The ice bucket kept their drinks ready for the toast, while photography preserved the story beyond the afternoon itself.
Enhancements do not have to make an experience feel larger or busier. The right additions make the picnic more comfortable, personal and complete.
Planning an Intimate Gender Reveal Picnic
A gender reveal does not have to become a large party unless that is what the parents truly want.
An intimate picnic works especially well for couples who want time to process the news together before sharing it publicly. A trusted friend or family member can receive the results, coordinate the reveal item and join the couple afterward without turning the moment into a large production.
When planning your own gender reveal picnic, consider:
Who should receive the confidential results?
Would you prefer cake, flowers, balloons or another reveal method?
Are there pregnancy-safe beverage options you would enjoy?
Do you have allergies or dietary preferences?
Would you like professional photographs of the reveal?
Who, if anyone, should join you after the surprise?
Jamese’s experience showed that three people, one beautiful picnic and a thoughtfully kept secret can be more than enough.
